Copperas Cove High School wants to provide students with the best opportunity possible to be successful in today’s competitive world. The courses offered are designed with this thought in mind. Course selection should be taken seriously during the high school years. Our responsibility is to provide courses that meet the rigorous demands you will encounter at a post-secondary school or in the workforce.

Important Notice to Students and Parents

While we will carefully check student transcripts to be sure students are enrolled in the proper classes to meet graduation requirements, CCHS staff cannot assume sole responsibility for ensuring that students are enrolled in all additional courses required for a more rigorous graduation plan.

Students are not allowed to move on to higher levels of instruction in some areas until they have successfully completed prerequisite classes. Therefore, if a student fails a class, it is the student’s responsibility to see their counselor about options for making up the credit and to be sure the student is enrolled in the proper classes for the next semester or school year.

Students and parents are encouraged to carefully plan the four-year high school program. Printed material outlining each of the graduation plans is included in this course selection guide. Please read this information closely. It is always best to consult college catalogs to determine entrance requirements for the schools of interest and use this information to plan the four-year high school program.

While the counselors will certainly be glad to help students plan their four-year program, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that he/she completes all courses required for the graduation plan of choice.

State and district published policies or changes hereafter take precedence over the information provided in this guide. Copperas Cove ISD does not discriminate against any person because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or on any other basis prohibited by law.

Course Offerings

Copperas Cove High School offers courses based on TEA compliance, sufficient funding, instructor availability, and/or student enrollment. If the course did not make, it is because of one or more of these factors.

Student Classification

Student grade classification is determined by the number of credits the student accumulates starting with his/her first semester in high school (grades 9-12). Grade classification is determined by the number of credits at the beginning of the school year. For students entering CCHS from other districts/states, classification will be determined on an individual basis.

Class Rank and Grade Point Average

Grade point average (GPA) shall be used for ranking high school students. A student’s class ranking shall be determined within the graduating class of the school year in which the student completes all requirements for a diploma, regardless of the number of years the student is enrolled in high school. Class rank shall be figured at the end of the fall and spring semesters until the last semester of the senior year. The District shall report to the members of a class, at the end of the first semester of the sophomore year and every semester thereafter, the weighted GPA for those representing the top ten percent in that class. Final class rank and valedictorian and salutatorian honors shall be determined at the end of the fifth six-week grading period of the senior year. The final class rank at the end of the fifth six-week grading period shall become the permanent record and shall be placed on the student’s academic achievement record (AAR); no re-ranking shall occur after graduation for transcript purposes.

All courses have been placed on a weighted system and grade points shall be assigned according to the level of the course. A student’s final GPA throughout his or her high school career (grades 9–12) shall be the accumulation of total grade points divided by the total number of attempted grade point credits.

If a student takes a course graded by pass/fail, the GPA is computed by dividing by one less course. When a student fails a course for the semester and subsequently repeats the course and earns a passing grade, both numerical grades shall be recorded on the transcript and used in the calculation of the overall GPA. Credits earned in the following ways shall not be used in computing GPA and class rank:

•     Examinations for acceleration;

•     Credit by examination;

•     High school courses taken prior to grade 9;

•     Crossroads High School credits

Calculation and Weighted Grade System

A student must take a corresponding AP examination to receive any additional weight unless the student is a senior enrolled in an AP class with at least an 80 on a scale of 100 or a “B” average at the time that grade points are calculated. In this circumstance, the District shall award AP weight to a semester grade with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP examination, dual credit weight with a score of 3 on the AP examination, and Pre-AP weight with a score of 1 or 2 on the AP examination.

Pre-AP weight shall be awarded for courses labeled as pre-AP or any other courses locally designated as honors, and Academic courses shall be considered any other eligible course not labeled as AP, dual credit, pre-AP, or Access.

The District shall include in the calculation of class rank semester grades earned in high school credit courses taken in the following subject areas only:  English, mathematics, science, social studies, languages other than English, and any other course eligible to be awarded credit in these areas.

Note: The following provisions shall apply to students in the graduating classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The District shall convert semester grades earned in eligible courses to grade points in accordance with the following chart and shall calculate a weighted GPA.
